BOOKS
Oral Production Rule Book For Teachers and Learners of North American English, by Glenda Reece, contains rules, tools, and practice sessions to help teachers, students and self-learners develop a speaking sound and manner similar to North American native speakers.
In addition to vocabulary, internationals need to learn the difference between content and structure words, proper use of volume, tone, rhythm, linking of words, sound units, blends and glides. This book explains and provides rules that will help both teachers and learners to cover those topics.
Note: Self-learners can use the book without a teacher, however, an assistant who speaks North American English is useful to act as a source to be copied, and as a listener who can judge whether words have been spoken the same way that a native speaker would say them.
It is available from Amazon.com for $10.00.
Twelve Topics For ESL Beginners, by Glenda Reece, is a secular workbook covering twelve topics that ESL beginners need to know. Topic one covers Introductions, Greetings, Alphabet, and numbers; topic two consists of vocabulary related to work; topic three begins coverage of parts of the body plus days of the week; topic four continues parts of the body plus pain, and complaints; topic five is about family and colors; topic six is about clothing; topic seven covers body, health, and emergencies; topic eight talks about medicines and dosages; topic nine consists of money, shopping, and food; topic ten covers fast food restaurants; topic eleven goes into the Post Office and money orders; and topic twelve introduces maps and the community.
There is a teacher book and a student book. The Student Workbook is a consumable book with blanks to fill in while learning vocabulary and practicing writing skills. The Teacher Guide contains everything in the student book plus a Teacher Preface and Teacher Notes that precede each topic. Because these books include the alphabet and writing exercises, they are particularly good for use with refugees whose native language does not use the English character set.
Each book is available on Amazon.com for $6.00. Click for the Teacher Guide or the Student Workbook.
Alternately, you can download the files from this web site (see Downloads below), but your cost of printing - especially if you use an ink jet printer - will probably be more than the price of the books at Amazon.
Bible Verse Chants, by Glenda Reece, is a book of chants for teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) using verses from the NIV Bible. The lessons are designed to teach pronunciation with an emphasis on linking, sound units, and the rhythm of American English. The use of rhythm bubbles and sound unit marks help students distinguish between content and structure words, and also helps them to stop voicing each word as a separate and unconnected unit of speech. It is available from Amazon.com for $15.00.
English Lessons from the Bible: Book of Mark, by Glenda Reece, is a two volume textbook that provides a complete English as a Second Language course. Together the two volumes contain 16 teaching units, each of which has three lessons plus a section containing Practice Exercises. All nouns and verbs are illustrated with drawings; all verb tenses are taught; and both active and passive voices are taught (volume 2).
The texts are professionally written, but designed to be used by volunteers as well as professionals. The Teacher's editions contain class objectives, applicable rules, and answers, as well as tips and techniques for the teacher. Characters and stories are taken from the Gospel of Mark in the Good News Bible.
The set consists of four books:
Book 1 Student Edition
Book 1 Teacher Edition
Book 2 Student Edition
Book 2 Teacher Edition.

The Christian Life, by Celia Herring Middleton. NOTE: This is not an ESL book; it is a Bible Study book recommended by Glenda Reece. It is intended for serious and very deep studies, preferably in a group setting.
This is one of the most detailed, accurate, and comprehensive Bible Studies available to those who truly want to know answers and to attain a deep and personal relationship with God through the Bible. The book uses a hands-on approach that will involve readers and hold their interest as they progress through twenty topics, which could provide more than a full year of in-depth Bible study. Topics include the profound discovery of who God is, whether one is reborn or not, the sinning Christian, the indwelling counselor, spiritual warfare, and many others. The book leaves lots of space where the reader should write in suggested Bible verses and personal notes. The study may be completed as an individual, as a group or a combination of both. This study is a “keeper” for serious Christians. It is available on Amazon.com for $8.00.

ESL/Bible Commands of Christ, by Glenda Reece. These lessons are the beginning of a work in progress. There are many more commands. These are for use with a multi-level class, and not really for tutoring, but could be used there also. The Commands include a great deal of ESL material, such as re-spelling of difficult words for pronunciation, choral reading for comprehension, pronunciation practice, correct use of content and structure words with the sound units marked. Of course there is lots of vocabulary, epecially the use of word thermometers. Body language and facial expression work makes it really fun. Scripture speaks and never returns void. Using English to teach the Bible is the greatest of joys and opens up greater levels of learning. Intermediate and Advanced students respond well to this, and mid-beginners often memorize the verses. All the work should be done orally and chorally. It works.

Learning Of Jesus, by Doris Edwards. These lessons feature the Lipson method and target a flexible high-beginner level of proficiency. With an integrated skills approach, all four skills reinforce each other in the learning process. Learners' real-life needs are addressed with earthly objectives, while heavenly objectives point toward their deeper spiritual needs. A cultural focus validates the students' worldview and promotes cross-cultural understanding. You can download the lessons and make copies for your students for free as long as you abide by the copyright.
